When driving through the state, drivers might be curious about which counties have the most automobile accidents, particularly fatal accidents.

Which counties in New Jersey see the most fatal car accidents?

Counties leading in fatal auto accidents

The New Jersey counties that lead in the number of fatal accidents in 2022 are Middlesex, Burlington, Essex, Camden, Monmouth, Ocean, Bergen, Gloucester, Atlantic and Union.

Middlesex County is right outside of New York City and people commonly pass through that county on the way from there to Philadelphia. Similarly, Burlington County, home to the second most fatal number of auto accidents, is right outside of Philadelphia but also contains many rural roads as compared to the rest of the state, which can be hazardous in their own way.

Main causes of fatal auto accidents

In New Jersey, one of the main causes of car accidents where at least one person dies is someone driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Distracted driving is another leading cause. Driving while intoxicated and distracted driving are both largely preventable causes of fatal accidents.

Regardless of which county someone is driving in New Jersey, drivers should remain aware of their surroundings and practice defensive driving in order to avoid an accident that can lead to injury or death.
