How to perform a motorcycle safety inspection

On Behalf of | May 13, 2023 | Motorcycle Accidents

As a biker, you know nothing compares with the rush of heading out on a souped-up motorcycle. Like all hog enthusiasts, you live for the sense of freedom two-wheeled vehicles offer.

Just as you must attend to the rules of the road, you are equally responsible for verifying that your ride is safe. Knowing how to conduct an inspection should yield superior results.

Step #1: Address the biggest problems

Slowly walk around the bike, looking for clear trouble spots. Cracks in frames and leaks are a recipe for disaster, so repair these concerns as soon as possible.

Step #2: Check the tires

Maintaining the correct tire pressure remains essential. See that yours have the proper inflation. Afterward, examine the tread. If you suspect it is wearing thin, replace your tires before traveling anywhere.

Step #3: Test the brakes

Having the ability to stop on a dime is mandatory. Try braking in an enclosed area before taking on the highway. Also, examine the brake pads for excessive wear, and install new ones if necessary.

Step #4: Inspect the hoses

When tubes start leaking or detach, it puts a bike out of commission. If the matter worsens while in motion, it can turn tragic. A quick peek might prevent a devastating wipeout.

Step #5: Confirm the fluid levels

Motorcycles need brake fluid, transmission fluid and engine oil. Missing any of those could end in a regrettable accident. Use a dipstick to make sure enough of each is present.

With all this done, you can feel confident that a mechanical malfunction will not lead to a stay in the hospital. Solace comes from taking proactive safety measures.
