Paxil is an anti-depressant and is prescribed for a serious, continuing depression that interferes with a person's ability to function. Paroxetine belongs to a group of medicines known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These medicines are thought to work by increasing the activity of the chemical serotonin in the brain. This medicine is available only with a doctor's prescription.
