Zyban or bupropion hydrochloride is a non-nicotine oral aid to smoking cessation. Bupropion hydrochloride is also prescribed for depression. It is not exactly known exactly how the drug works as a smoking deterrent. It is used to help in smoking cessarion treatment that consists of behavioral interventions, counseling and other support services.

Contraindications

Any of the following may be reason to choose a different drug. Inform your doctor before starting therapy.

	Allergic to bupropion
	Using other bupropion products or monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) at the same time as bupropion
	History of a seizures disorder
	History of anorexia nervosa or bulimia

Common side effects

You may experience the following side effects with the use of this drug:

	Nausea or vomiting
	Loss of appetite
	Constipation
	Dry mouth
	Weight loss
	Increased sweating
	Agitation
	Anxiety
	Dizziness
	Insomnia
	Tremor
	Skin rash or itching
	Headache
	Ringing in the ears
	Fainting
	Confusion
	Drowsiness
	Hallucinations
	Seizures
	Increased heart rate
	Blurred vision
	Taste changes

Life-Threatening Symptoms

	Seizures
	Possible Overdose Symptoms
	Increased heart rate
	Nausea or vomiting
	Hallucinations
	Loss of consciousness

Precautions

There is a 1/1000 chance that patients taking Zyban will have a seizure. Discuss this with your physician. Predisposing factors that may increase the risk of seizures associated with bupropion therapy include a prior history of seizures, a history of head trauma, CNS tumor, or concomitant use of any drug that lowers the seizure threshold, such as MAO inhibitors, antipsychotics, steroids, anorexiants, or theophylline. Bupropion is generally started 7 days before the date on which smoking will be discontinued. It is important to also participate in a smoking cessation program to ensure maximum benefit from using this medication.
