Precautions
There is a 1/1000 chance that patients taking Zyban will have a seizure. Discuss this with your physician. Predisposing factors that may increase the risk of seizures associated with bupropion therapy include a prior history of seizures, a history of head trauma, CNS tumor, or concomitant use of any drug that lowers the seizure threshold, such as MAO inhibitors, antipsychotics, steroids, anorexiants, or theophylline.
Bupropion is generally started 7 days before the date on which smoking will be discontinued.
It is important to also participate in a smoking cessation program to ensure maximum benefit from using this medication.
Drug Dependency
Wellbutrin is likely to have a low drug abuse potential. There have been few reported cases of drug dependence and withdrawal symptoms.
Pregnancy Warnings
There are no adequate studies of fetal harm in pregnant women. If you are pregnant or plan to be, discuss this with your physician before initiating therapy.
Nursing Mothers
Because of the risk of potential harm to the newborn, avoid using this drug while breastfeeding. If therapy is necessary, avoid breastfeeding while on this drug.
Prolonged Use
Usage rarely lasts beyond the manufacturer recommended 7 to 12 weeks.
Discontinuing Therapy
Only discontinue therapy on the advice of your physician.
Operating a Vehicle or Heavy Machinery
This drug may produce side effects that impair your mental alertness, such as dizziness and confusion. Avoid such activities if you feel these symptoms. Avoid consuming alcohol or other CNS depressants while taking this drug. They may intensify these side effects.
