The family of a Memphis man who died last year has filed suit against the makers of the heartburn drug Propulsid, claiming the company and distributors for years downplayed its known health hazards and side effects. The Circuit Court suit filed on behalf of survivors of 64-year-old J. C. Jackson and two other plaintiffs from Jackson, Tenn., seeks to be certified by a judge as a class-action suit to represent thousands in the state who have taken Propulsid. The suit filed by attorney Timothy Holton seeks reimbursement for customers who have purchased the prescription drug, which costs $ 3 to $ 4 per pill.

Propulsid was marketed in 1993 by Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceutica of New Jersey. Since then, the Food and Drug Administration has warned that it can cause an irregular heartbeat and even death. The FDA cited at least 70 deaths and 200 other reports of harmful heart-related side effects attributed to the drug, which has also been prescribed for children and infants with gastroesophageal reflux. Earlier this year, Janssen and government regulators announced the drug would be pulled from the market and could be used only under strict clinical guidelines.
