September 22, 2009 - Wrong Embryo Implanted in Woman

An Ohio couple says their fertility clinic implanted the wrong frozen embryo into the wife and that she is now going to have another couple's baby.

Carolyn and Sean Savage, appearing on NBC's "Today Show" Monday, said they will give up the child after it's born to its biological parents.

The couple, who have three children despite serious reproductive health issues, had saved their embryos, and encouraged by the successful in-vitro fertilization and birth of their youngest child, they reportedly returned to the unnamed clinic in February for another try.

But Carolyn Savage, 40, told NBC the wrong embryo was implanted into her. She is scheduled to have the child in two weeks via Cesarean section and has agreed to give the baby boy to his real parents.

"We know they did not ask for this. We are not going to press ourselves into their lives," she said. "Of course, we will wonder about this child every day for the rest of our lives. We have hopes for him -- but they're his parents."
