May 13, 2010 - Fla. Psychiatrist Suspended in Boy's Death

Dr. Steven L. Kaplan, a South Florida psychiatrist, has had his license yanked by state officials following the overdose death of a boy he treated.

The Miami Herald reported Thursday state Surgeon General Ana M. Viamonte Ros had ruled Kaplan was guilty of "medical malpractice." The suspension order labeled Kaplan "an immediate, serious danger to the health, safety or welfare of the public."

The suspension follows the May 23, 2007, death of autistic 12-year-old Denis Maltez from an overdose of two powerful prescribed anti-psychotic medications.

Last month, the state Agency for Health Care Administration had cut Kaplan from the state Medicaid program that had covered the costs of treatment of many of the doctor's patients, the Herald said.

The newspaper said Kaplan did not return repeated calls for comment and had not yet filed a response to his suspension, which was immediate but for an unclear period of time.
