September 30, 2009 - Woman Brain Dead After Spa Procedure

Homicide detectives in Florida are investigating a spa where a 37-year-old woman ended up brain dead following a procedure, a lawyer for her family says.

Rohie Kah-Orukotan of Miramar, Fla., remained hospitalized on life support Wednesday after being declared officially brain dead, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

The family's lawyer said at a news conference that the mother of three went to Weston Medspa for a "minimally invasive procedure" last Friday and no one knows what went wrong.

Freeland said he requested her medical records from the facility but the request was denied.

The spa is not licensed by Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration and a spokeswoman said the agency has opened an investigation.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office is also investigating.

An online listing shows the spa is licensed by the state to perform electrolysis and a doctor can perform very minor liposuction there.
