April 19, 2010 - Pilot Killed in Single-Engine Plane Crash

A crash shortly after takeoff killed the pilot of a single-engine plane registered to a missionary group in Dunnellon, Fla., authorities said.

The 1977 Maule, with just the pilot aboard, crashed Sunday night in a field at the end of the runway at Orlando North Airpark, The Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported Monday.

The plane was engulfed in flames when emergency crews arrived, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.

The pilot's name was not publicly released. The plane was registered to the Indigenous People's Technology and Education Center, based in Dunnellon, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Orlando North Airpark has one runway and no control tower. The runway primarily is used by agricultural crop-dusting planes and small-plane owners, the Sentinel said.
