July 13, 2005 - MIT Settles Suit

MIT recently settled a lawsuit alleging wrongful death.  The suit holds MIT responsible for the death of a student who inhaled a fatal dose of nitrus oxide in his dorm room in 1999. The settlement between MIT and the parents of the decedent Richard Guy creates an endowment in their son's name.  The endowment will establish a pre-orientation program for newly incoming freshmen. Guy suffocated in September 1999 as he inhaled nitrous oxide from a bag. He was a 22-year-old physics major from California.  The lawsuit filed in 2002 by Janet and Richard A. Guy Sr. accused MIT of failing to properly supervise students and neglecting evidence of drug abuse in the dorm. Guy's parents also acknowledged in the suit that their son "was not blameless in this tragedy."
