September 28, 2009 - Tampa Reports 50 Crashes in One Day

More than a dozen people were hospitalized during a 5-hour period that involved 50 crashes and 131 vehicles around Tampa Bay, Fla., police said.

Wet roads and heavy traffic contributed to the Sunday afternoon chaos, Florida Highway Patrol officials told The St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times in a story published Monday.

The first crash about 3:15 p.m. on Interstate 75 sparked seven other multiple collisions, including one involving a charter bus with more than 40 people aboard, police said.

At about 4:40 p.m., 23 more crashes involving 48 vehicles were reported on Interstate 4 with more crashes reported on I-275.
