March 16, 2010 - 2 Die in Mexican Tour Bus Crash in Texas

A Mexican tour bus loaded with spring breakers crashed Tuesday in Atascosa County, Texas, killing two people and injuring 27 others, officials said.

A Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman said the Americanos bus rolled over near the Campbellton exit on Interstate 37, KSAT-TV, San Antonio, reported.

The San Antonio Express-News reported the bus was headed for Metamora, Mexico, with 40 people, including the driver, aboard.

Texas Department of Public Safety Capt. Steven Tellez said the crash occurred shortly after the driver reported hearing popping sounds. The vehicle slid from the rain-slicked roadway into a ditch, landing on its side.

Eleven of the injured were transported by helicopter to San Antonio hospitals.

Mark Baldon, who came upon the crash soon after it occurred, told KSAT he saw the bus on its side in the median and a few people lying on the ground.

"(The) bus was on its side and it was smoldering," Baldon said.
